mobile ux: floating menus

the floating menus block interaction with all elements behind them, until they're dismissed by clicking the X.

I think that is probably a good thing (accidentally dismissing something because of an errant touch on the screen sucks) but there's no visual indication that only the menu is currently interactive. the menu also tends to blend in with the surrounding page which has confused me a couple times.

I think having a translucent black overlay over the entire page except for the menu would help communicate that a menu is up.

(also - it would be great if we could handle the android back button somehow to dismiss the menu)

The lack of overlay appears to have been a bug I caused. That's been fixed.

Agreed, although mobile browsers don't make the UX easy for that. IIRC, the Android back button is hardwired to the browser's back button (at least, on Chrome/Firefox), which means other "back" gestures like swiping would just close the menu instead of going back a page.
