The dark mode of F9's theme is a heavy work in progress, and I haven't fully mapped out how the SMF Curve theme CSS works. So if you see any issues, or if anything doesn't work as it does in light mode, mention it here!
is there a reasonable way to have dark mode change the header to use an alternate banner that's white-text-on-black-background

Definitely! This is something I hope to fix soon. Just need to make sure the saturation of the bars/logo don't make it look too annoying with a dark background.
The header has been updated! I've simplified it so it's less distracting overall.
I think it looks really nice!
6 years ago the default theme used images for rounded borders, I'm not sure if that's still the case (can't check, on phone - it doesn't seem fuzzy though) but I had started on some changes to try to modernize the theme here https://git.vvn.space/vivlim/smf-curve-dynamic

They did move to more modern CSS, with border-radius and linear gradients and the sort. Not sure when that happened, although I'm guessing that was around SMF 2.1's release. Some of the modifications I made to the theme were to make it
less modern even, haha.
